Connecting Two Stories

A dystopian society, where the evilness of one person penetrates the mind of people and controls the life of many others. 1984 by George Orwell and the film V for Vendetta by James McTeigue can be analyze by one same theme, which is the danger of dictatorship in a nation. A dictatorship is when one person does whatever he is able to do to rule his country and that same person is the only one who sets the laws without consulting anybody of the government or party.

When you hear the word dictatorship, the first thing that comes to your mind is King Louis the XIV which ruled France with the old regime and had most of his people living with lack of control. However in this case 1984 and v for vendetta give us a fiction look of how England may possibly be when one person has total power over others and is capable to do anything that he pleasures
A quote comes to mind when you are watching the fictional movie v for vendetta “with great powers comes great responsibility” In this movie the chancellor is the one that has the great power in whole England, but commits many mistakes and doesn’t take the sufficient responsibility to sustain the country. The mistakes that he does are enough to cause chaos in any other democratic nation, for examples controlling important information to people, psychological control, and the most important the danger of a dictatorship.

The chancellor is the dictator of England in the film and shapes the country however he wants. The dangerous part of it is occulting information which somehow the rumor will and cause normal people to revolt. In the movie an important character appears by the letter V. this character is aware of all the errors the chancellor is making to the people and V analyzes it and tries to prove to people the dangerous part of the chancellor. Even though everyone believed in their government, V made a drastic change in people’s life and he became the main objective on the dictator.
What this all means is that one person can be able to influence a whole nation by just showing the horrible and shocking part of one nation. In real life the greatest fear of a dictator are the people because doesn’t matter where you live the people form the largest population in the country, and we have the power to change our lives and our government. Eventually this is what happens in the film where the influence of V transformed the government.

1984 by George Orwell presents just about the same aspect as the film. In the book the dictator is known “big brother” which he is a dictator and only a figure of fear for all the people of the party. “big brother” thinks by saying “big brother is watching you” would also create more fear and respect within only 15 percent of the population of Oceania or England, because the other 85 percent are the proles which they don’t receive any influence from “big brother” because they live their life however they want and they are not included in the party. However on thing the proles don’t realize is that they have the power to change Oceania and overthrown “big brother”

While you read this book a quote comes to mind “absolute power corrupts absolutely” this shows that “big brother” has absolute power over Oceania and is corrupting everyone in the party except Winston because he sees the problems and dangerous parts of “big brother” making on Oceania. Winston also tries to limit the power of the party because the party is using many techniques to control their citizens, one example is the telescreens which sees and hears you. In the story Winston challenges the party by doing things he isn’t suppose to because he wants to modify the way his is living his life and have the pleasures of normal person.

In the book Winston shows his desperations of overthrowing “big brother” and he is relaying on O’Brien which Winston thinks he is part of the “brotherhood”, a secret organization that tries to eliminate “big brother”. Ironically O’Brien is not part from this secret organization and he just planed to catch Winston and eliminate any sort of scheme against “big brother”. Winston is later brainwash. The fact that Winston was brainwash was to demonstrate that the party and “big brother” have intense power to modify the thoughts of people as they pleasure and also to have no contradictions towards the party. What this all means is that the perseverance of one person might or might not alter other peoples thoughts but instead it will create a lesson for the party to learn.

In conclusion both 1984 by George Orwell and the movie V for Vendetta has the same background and has the same goal but one succeeds and the other fails. By the end of both stories a quote comes to mind “try and fail but don’t fail to try” this means that even though the competition is further powerful, don’t resign and face the dangers of your nation, in other words always persevere to have a change.
